Trump allows the 1807 law to apply

October 13, 2025

US President Donald Trump is considering every possible option to restore order in the country, in particular, he is ready to apply the law of insurrection, speak US Vice President JD Vance spoke to reporters on NBC News' Meet the Press program.

Trump allows the 1807 law to apply

A day earlier, the White House dispatched National Guard troops to Oregon and Illinois to quell protests in Portland and Chicago. Both decisions are temporarily blocked in court.

Moderator Kristen Welker asked for clarification on whether the White House would actually consider invoking the 1807 law given the current situation in the country.

“The President is considering all possible options. Right now he does not feel the need to do this (take measures prescribed by law),” Vance explained.

The vice president made it clear that the problem is that all US media, “instigated by some far-left crazy people”, consider it normal to attack US law enforcement agencies and publish revealing articles. He added that the government cannot and does not want to solve this problem.

Trump wants everyone to be safe, Vance said. He added that the Cabinet of Ministers was doing “everything possible to make Americans feel safe in their country.”

Recall that the Insurrection Act is a US federal law that gives the president the authority to deploy military force or federalize the National Guard on US soil to suppress protests.

This document is commonly known as the Insurrection Act of 1807 and is associated with President Thomas Jefferson.

In fact, according to lawyers, the Act is a collection of laws passed between 1792 and 1871, which defined the role of the US military in maintaining law and order in the country.

The law allows military personnel to engage in domestic law enforcement activities such as arrests and searches, activities that they are normally prohibited from performing.

In the 20th and 21st centuries, it was practically not used – the last time it was remembered was under President George HW Bush, when it was necessary to quell riots in Los Angeles in 1992.

Previously, it was reported that the US President in June 2025 intended to use the Insurrection Act of 1807 to suppress protests in California.
