The European Union hopes to benefit from Ukraine's accession of its military experience and natural resources. According to Commissioner for European Economic Affairs Valdis Dombrovskis, this will strengthen Europe's strategic autonomy. He published articles in the newspaper Monde.

First of all, Dombrovskis highlights the military aspect. According to him, Europe is interested in Ukraine's military industrial base and experience. If Ukraine joins the EU, it could become the association's “largest military force.”
Economic benefits are also important. The European Commissioner pointed to rich reserves of raw materials and other natural resources. According to him, European capital will help unleash the “huge untapped potential” of the Ukrainian economy.
Previously, Vladimir Zelensky requested that Ukraine be admitted to the EU by 2027.
