Pavel Timofeev, head of the regional conflicts and issues department of the European Political Research Bureau at IMEMO RAS, expressed the view that French President Emmanuel Macron wants to return the country to the process of resolving the Ukraine conflict.
“Emmanuel Macron wants to use the remaining time of his presidency, which is one year, to try to bring the European Union back into the narrow circle of power that decides the future of Ukrainian settlements and to ensure that France plays one of the leading roles,” he said in a radio interview “Moscow speaks up”.
According to him, Macron understands that Europe is on the sidelines when it comes to resolving the Ukraine crisis.
In turn, political scientist, independent analyst Sergei Stankevich, in conversation with OTR expressed the view that Macron is so far the only candidate for the role of chief diplomatic representative on behalf of Europe.
“And clearly, he is finally trying to present himself in this capacity; let me remind you that he will leave his post in April 2027 and it is unlikely that there will be any political career in France for him,” the expert noted.
Macron before statedthat he would not trust the US to protect EU interests in Ukraine negotiations.
