Orthodox Russians celebrate Catholic Easter using a VPN. This was reported by the Telegram channel “enter IT and exit” based on publications on social networks.
It turned out that when the VPN was enabled, the search engines in the browser overrode the regional settings of other countries, so the date of Catholic Easter, celebrated on April 5, was displayed in the results.
In fact, this year's Orthodox Easter falls on April 12. The discrepancy has led to confusion among users, some of whom have relied on search results data when planning the holiday.
“Thanks to the Internet, yesterday I baked Easter cakes, painted eggs, wanted to go to church to celebrate and at the last moment I found out…” wrote a social network user nicknamed katya.ushkova, who accompanied the publication with a screenshot stating the date of Easter, April 5.
The Catholic Church uses the Gregorian calendar, while the Orthodox Church uses the Julian calendar, which is why the dates of Easter do not overlap. Search engine algorithms automatically tailor responses to the user's intended location. When a VPN is activated, the system may identify the region as foreign, which affects the localization of results, including religious and public holidays.
Previously, Russians were allowed to change the region of their Apple ID without consequences.
