Mikhalkov was asked about the attitude towards cinema of countries that have lost their sovereignty following the example of Europe, which is dependent on America. The director replied that he was not interested in EU countries and called the Oscars an award of the American regional committee.
“European cinema has completely lost its sovereignty. Remember neo-realism, the “new wave” in France, remember Polish cinema of the 70s and 80s. Now what has all this become? – he added.
Responding to a question about whether he believed Europe had become enslaved by the United States, Mikhalkov cited the phrase “chronicle of diminishing returns.” In his opinion, she is “correct about that.”
