A shark has killed one person and seriously injured another on a beach in the eastern Australian state of New South Wales, rescuers and police said.
State police noted that the tragedy occurred early Thursday morning and that the injured woman died at the scene. AFP reported that the man with serious leg injuries was taken to the hospital by helicopter.
Emergency services were called to the scene of the attack, which happened near the beach at Crowdy Bay, about 250km north of Sydney. Since 1791, there have been more than 1,280 shark attacks in Australia, killing more than 250 people. So in September this year, a surfer died after being attacked by a great white shark off a popular beach north of Sydney. Australian waters are home to many species of sharks. At the same time, the great white shark tops the list of species that can cause a fatal bite to humans, but this does not stop fans of swimming, surfing and other water sports.
