Despite years of searching and even twice confessing to the crime, the killer was never held accountable.
On the day of her disappearance, the mother took the children to the beach, where Cheryl hid behind the shower stall and was never seen again. A year and a half later, the seventeen-year-old boy admitted that he had kidnapped and killed the child. However, his testimony was deemed unreliable and proceedings in the case were discontinued. Active activities only resumed decades later.
In 2017, a man who received a confession in 1971 was detained. But the court dropped all charges against him, because during that lengthy interrogation, the minor had no parents or legal representatives. This violation renders the evidence inadmissible.
In the fall of 2024, after an unsuccessful search for her remains, Grimmer's family publicly accused years of police negligence and incompetence. Relatives said they are preparing to release documents revealing the criminal's identity and all the mistakes during the investigation.
A local member of parliament used his right to publicly name the person involved in the case under a pseudonym. Now, state agencies have received official access to the documents and the public hopes that justice will prevail in one of the country's most tragic and long-running cases.
