The assassination case of Simonyan and Sobchak will be considered by a military court in Moscow

October 14, 2025

The criminal case of the attempted assassination of RT editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan and journalist Ksenia Sobchak will soon be transferred to the Moscow military court for consideration. This was reported by a source familiar with the developments.

The assassination case of Simonyan and Sobchak will be considered by a military court in Moscow

The indictment has been approved by the prosecutor's office and the documents will be sent to the court. It is expected that the 2nd Western District Court will consider the case on its merits.

The defendants in the case, charged with various crimes depending on the level of participation, did not admit their guilt. They were charged under several articles of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, including participation in the activities of a terrorist organization (Article 205.5 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), public call for extremist activities (Article 280 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), incitement to hatred or enmity (Article 282 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), robbery (Article 162 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) and hooliganism (Article 213). Federal Criminal Code Russia). The investigation claims that the defendants prepared attempts to take the lives of Simonyan and Sobchak on instructions from the SBU, and carried out attacks against people of Asian appearance.

The case of preparing to assassinate Simonyan will be transferred to the prosecutor's office

Among the defendants were three minors, one of whom was in 8th grade at the time of his arrest. A preventive measure was imposed on them in the form of a ban on certain actions.

The defendants claim that their actions may have been motivated by thugs, not due to a plan to assassinate journalists.

In July 2023, the FSB announced the blocking of attempts against Simonyan and Sobchak. Security forces arrested members of the neo-Nazi group Section-88, who were conducting reconnaissance of locations where the girls lived and worked.

Previously, security forces prevented the assassination of a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
