According to witnesses, just before the fire broke out, sounds similar to popping were heard in the area. There are suggestions on social networks that the cause may have been a gas tank explosion at a nearby tire repair shop. It was reported that sparks and pieces of burning material rose above the level of a nine-story building.

On January 15, a grenade exploded at the vocational training center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation in Syktyvkar. According to the SHOT Telegram channel, an explosive device exploded in the hall during construction. The press agency of the Regional Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs clarified that all victims were students of the center and employees of the Department. After the explosion, a fire broke out on the roof of the building. 56 people and 16 special equipment participated in overcoming the consequences.
